Job Description
Overview: PURPOSE: Manages the operation of the Maintenance Department and coordinates with the Mine Superintendent in order to achieve the production goals of the Fairport Mine.

Responsibilities: Key Responsibilities: 

  • Prepares operating cost center budget and constantly monitors expenditures to stay within plan. Looks for cost reduction opportunities.
  • Investigates and resolves problems related to engineering and maintenance.
  • Works to increase the plants equipment availability through training, effective use of personnel, and preventative maintenance.
  • Monitors the purchasing of spare parts and inventory spare parts, as well as sets minimum and maximum quantities.
  • Establishes and maintains a communications network both vertically and horizontally with superiors, subordinates, and peers.
  • Administers and conducts meaningful performance appraisals and salary reviews within the department.
  • Supervises employees in a manner that will promote good labor relations.
  • Promotes safe work habits in compliance of the maintenance personnel and the assessment of training needs. 
  • Manages subordinates to make them more effective
  • Resolve Management and Union contract problems through First, Second, and Third Step. Attend Fourth Step Grievance meetings to resolve or find solutions for contract differences.
  • Ensure that Safety training is given to help prevent accidents and to ensure that Federal and State laws as well as Company rules and policies are followed.
  • Monitors MSDS booklets as per Federal Law regarding employees right to know. 
  •  Member of Management Safety Committee and Management/Union Committee
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering and six (6) to ten (10) years of maintenance experience.
  • Ability to deal with subordinates in a persuasive and positive manner.
  • Knowledge of maintenance procedures
  • Ability and desire to change existing practices, if needed, in order to meet plant objectives
  • Capacity to communicate with the public, peers, and subordinates
  • Must be safety conscious
  • Communicates with HR Manager regarding employee relations, manpower, and contract interpretations.
