Job Description

Plan, organize, direct and control all environmental, health, and safety activities to assure they are maintained in accordance with governmental and corporate requirements and within budgetary limits.  Provide the leadership, guidance, and support to successfully drive continual improvement in the site’s EHS Management System and culture. Work closely with managers, technical staff, employees and contractors to achieve EHS-related key performance indicators.

Responsibilities The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring site specific environmental, health, safety (EHS), and industrial hygiene policies and procedures in compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements.
  • Provide support involving site security activities as they relate to health and safety.
  • Providing guidance and support to employees regarding EHS questions, concerns, and requirements.
  • Coaching and mentoring management and employees on safe work practices and behaviors.
  • Identifying and evaluating EHS risks and ensuring proper risk reduction and control measures are implemented.
  • Completing Industrial Hygiene assessments and monitoring in accordance with annual monitoring plan.
  • Leading/facilitating EHS teams focusing on increasing employee engagement and empowerment.
  • Ensuring effective EHS-related training is developed and completed according to the training plan.
  • Performing EHS inspections, audits, drills and self-assessments to ensure and validate compliance with all regulatory and company requirements.
  • Tracking and trending injuries, near miss events, safety observations, and property damage incidents.
  • Measuring, monitoring, and reporting site specific EHS-related key performance indicators to management and Corporate EHS.
  • Ensuring timely and effective completion of EHS-related corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Responding to, investigating, and managing EHS-related incidents; ensuring proper escalation, root cause analysis, and completion of sustainable corrective actions.
  • Ensuring a positive working relationship with EHS agencies and representing facility during agency inspections. Completing required internal and external EHS-related recordkeeping and reporting.
  • Maintaining all facility environmental permits, initiating modifications, as required, and preparing routine submittals to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Ensuring facility operational support for Corporate-wide sustainability goals which include energy, water, and waste reduction.
  • Continuously improving EHS program through Management Systems (e.g., ISO 14001 & 45001).
  • Coordinates and oversees required EHS sampling and monitoring.
  • Managing facility waste storage, disposal, reporting, and recordkeeping.
  • Managing site’s EHS incentive program to achieve corporate objectives and maintain costs within budget.
  • Preparing budgets. Recommending and preparing proposals for capital and operational expenditures for safety, industrial hygiene and environmental projects, as required.
  • Completing special assignments as requested.
Staying current on government regulations and emerging issues and trends in EHS.

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university and 3-5 years of related experience in an industrial manufacturing setting.
  • Ability to influence others and present recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to be part of and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Able to demonstrate a thorough and comprehensive understanding of relevant EHS standards.
  • Creative thinking skills with the ability to balance multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience in developing and/or implementing the Voluntary Protection Program and ISO 14001.
  • Working knowledge of environmental permitting and regulations, specifically NSPS, MACT, NPDES, EPCRA, RCRA, and DOT.
  • Proficient in performing Industrial Hygiene testing (Noise, CO, Dust, Ventilation, etc.).
  • Flexible in working during non-business hours to meet business needs.
  • Have or ability to obtain the following certifications:  Visible Emissions (Method 9) Evaluator and New York State Asbestos Supervisor.
