External Quality Auditor in Chicago, IL at Morton Salt

Job Description

The primary responsibility of this position is to conduct Quality and Food Safety related audits at supplier and co-manufacturing/co-packing facilities within the Morton Salt supply chain. This is accomplished through the remote and onsite auditing of external facilities policies and practices.

Responsibilities External Manufacturing Audits:
Conducting annual onsite audits (ISO, BRC, GMP, Customer schemes) of contact manufacturers and contract packers within the US, Canada, and Europe; Onsite audits include site audit preparation, audit performance, audit reporting, and audit corrective action follow-up and closure.
Partner with Field Auditors to drive conformance in assessment between Internal and External manufacturing facilities.
Partner with External Quality Manager to develop and execute audit to Morton Salt EM Quality and Food Safety Standards.
Analyze audit data to identify trends and issues quarterly reports to management for improvement opportunities.
 
Supplier Audits:
Partner with Supplier Quality Manager to develop and execute onsite and desk audits to assess Suppliers’ abilities to meet Morton Salt, regulatory, and Industry Food Safety and Quality requirements.
Manage Annual Foundation Survey of current suppliers; Escalating any issues requiring follow up or corrective actions to Supplier Quality Manager.
Conduct onsite audits of supplier to support New Supplier Evaluation and Onboarding or to evaluate At Risk suppliers.
Act as liaison between Morton Salt and External Auditing body to conduct internal audit requirements.
 
General Functions:
Analyze External Manufacturing and Supplier audit data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
Prepare and issue quarterly reports to management on external partner capabilities and gaps.
Prepare and submit audit reports to responsible parties in a timely manner.
Provide support to Internal Field Auditing group on an as-needed basis.     

Qualifications Bachelor degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Engineering, or related field.
Minimum 5 years’ direct experience in auditing role within the food industry
Experience working in an ISO 9001 and/or GFSI manufacturing environment strongly preferred
Strong knowledge in GMPs, Food Safety and Quality management systems, HACCP, GMP, FSMA, BRC, ISO and relevant government regulations is required.
 
Passed a recognized Lead Auditor Training course conducted by a Third Party trainer.
Trained auditor in ISO and GFSI benchmarked schemes is required.
HACCP certification is required.
FSMA PCQI certification preferred, must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
Strong auditing and assessment skills are required.
Strong knowledge or food laws and US regulations required.
Excellent written & verbal communication skills, analytical ability, and ability to work effectively with a team are required.

Strong organization and time management skills.
Ability to adapt and be flexible within a changing work environment.
Internal personnel at all levels.
External – Contract manufacturing partners, suppliers, and third party auditing bodies
 
This position will be based in Chicago and will require approximately 75% travel including overnight stays.
