Job Description

The Can Line Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for proactively maintaining and repairing Can Line equipment (the equipment used in the manufacturing/filling/case packing of the cardboard cans of Morton Salt 26 oz Table Salt) to ensure the effective and reliable operation of machinery and equipment, while maintaining the quality of the product.
This is a 2nd shift, Monday - Friday Position.

Responsibilities Performs various jobs calling for specialized skills such as but not limited to: building, installing and repairing round can packaging equipment (such as the presses, cappers, filler, tube-winder, labeler, belt conveyors, etc.) and troubleshooting breakdowns or stoppages of any machine or equipment. Replaces, repairs, or modifies worn-out or broken parts; and assists other service-persons or maintenance crafts persons when necessary, as directed by the Supervisor and/or Can Line Maintenance Lead Person, however, normally works alone.


        Performs preventative and predictive Maintenance activities and makes necessary corrections and adjustments to control downtime and maintain maximum production and quality. Identifies and corrects root cause of repetitive failures.


        Installs, maintains, and repairs electrical systems, including, but not limited to, 120V, 240V, 480V, and low voltage control systems on can line equipment and other related equipment, operates any plant electrical equipment necessary in repair or installation work. Is able to wire panel boards, install brushes, repair commutators, install new coils in relays, etc. Also performs similar work on relays, timers, electric eyes, vibrators and controls, electronic controls, and other control equipment.


Is expected to perform general piping and tubing installation and repairs as necessary. Is expected to be familiar with pneumatic components, troubleshoot, repair and replace as necessary.


        Works from tool assembly or installation drawings and often makes special tools from piece parts, drawings, or detailed blueprints.


        Sets up and operates any and all machine tools including engine lathes, drill presses, cut-off saw, milling, bending, threading and bolt machines, grinders, shears, etc. and all types of mechanic’s hand tools and precision measuring instruments including micrometer, calipers, gauges, etc.

Qualifications Thorough knowledge of electric motors, hydraulic systems, pumps, presses, transformers, air cylinders, electronics, control circuits, Logic and air control valves and regulators.


Thorough knowledge of clutches, bearings, brakes, gears, cams, pulleys, gas burners, regulators, burner controls, and regulators.


Ability to operate lathes, mills, plasma cutters and cutting equipment to fabricate/repair machine/mechanical equipment and repair parts. Ability to perform various welding and fabrication operations to install, modify, enhance, repair, equipment/machinery.


High School diploma of the equivalent required

Industrial Maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment required

Additional maintenance/controls training/certification preferred.
