Job Description

Oversee the site’s health & safety programs, initiatives and day to day activities.  Assure site H&S programs are implemented and maintained in accordance with governmental and corporate requirements and within budgetary limits.  Provide the leadership, guidance, & support to successfully drive continual improvement in the site’s Health and Safety Management System and safety culture. Work closely with managers, technical staff, employees and contractors to achieve H&S related key performance indicators.  Serve as backup to Environmental Manager, as needed.

Responsibilities The Health & Safety Manager is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Developing & implementing site specific health, safety (H&S), industrial hygiene, & security policies & procedures in compliance with regulatory & corporate requirements.
  • Providing guidance & support to employees regarding H&S questions, concerns, & requirements.
  • Identifying & evaluating H&S risks & ensuring proper risk reduction & control measures are implemented.
  • Coaching and mentoring management and employees on safe work practices and behaviors.
  • Ensuring effective H&S related training is developed and completed according to the training plan.
  • Performing H&S inspections, audits, drills and self-assessments to ensure and validate compliance with all regulatory and company requirements.
  • Measuring, monitoring, and reporting site specific H&S related key performance indicators to management and Corporate H&S.
  • Ensuring timely and effective completion of H&S related corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Managing investigations of H&S related incidents & ensuring proper escalation, root cause analysis, and completion of sustainable corrective actions.
  • Completing Industrial Hygiene assessments & monitoring in accordance with annual monitoring plan.
  • Ensuring the fire sprinkler system and alarms are maintained, inspected and functioning properly.
  • Completing required internal and external H&S related recordkeeping & reporting.
  • Acting as the primary contact for external H&S related regulators.
  • Managing the site’s H&S incentive program to achieve corporate objectives & maintain costs within budget.
  • Leading/facilitating H&S teams focusing on increasing employee engagement & empowerment.
  • Tracking & trending injuries, near miss events, safety observations, and property damage incidents.
Staying current on government regulations and emerging issues and trends in H&S.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university and 3-7 years of related experience in an industrial manufacturing setting.
  • Ability to influence others and present recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to be part of and work effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Able to demonstrate a thorough and comprehensive understanding of relevant standards.
  • Creative thinking skills with the ability to balance multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Possesses knowledge of technical information regarding relevant H&S elements.
  • Experience in developing and/or implementing the Voluntary Protection Program, OHSAS 18001 or related ISO Management System.
  • Flexible in working during non-business hours to meet business needs.
