Job Description

This position, based in Manistee, Michigan, is responsible for managing all quality activities and programs at the site level.  It serves as the management representative for all applicable areas within Quality and Food Safety to ensure that we satisfy our customers, comply with corporate and local/state/federal regulatory requirements, and continuously improve our system, processes and culture.

  • Lead the plant in all Food Safety, Packaging Quality and Product Quality related activities for Human Food, Animal Feed, USP/Pharmaceutical, Oil/Gas Industry and Bulk De-Icing products.
  • Lead the consumer/customer complaint investigations, including conducting root cause analysis, driving corrective and preventative actions (CAPAs) into manufacturing processes and/or product specification, ensure compliance, and effectiveness of CAPAs.
  • Lead the plant in determining the annual Quality Program training needs for all employees.
  • Serve as the primary liaison within the plant for all Quality Programs - key customers are Corporate Quality, Customer Service and Consumer Affairs (for customer and consumer quality complaint issues), Third Party Auditors/External Regulatory Agency (i.e. FDA), Third Party Vendors (i.e. calibration company).
  • Serve as the Food Safety Program Team Leader for the plant to ensure the Food Safety Program is established, implemented, maintained.  Ensure it is reviewed and updated annually.
  • Conduct regular reviews of the facility Pre-requisite Programs (PRPs), GMP compliance and Sanitation/Housekeeping compliance.
  • Maintain and update the plant mock recall program and conduct traceability exercises as required.
  • Manage the Quality Management System for the facility, to include develop/revise/maintain and implement all facility level policies, procedures and work instructions that affect quality and/or safety of the products.
  • Oversee quality laboratory testing and reviews/approves results.  Manage the quality personnel and lab environment to insure a safe workplace.
  • Assist in determining the disposition of all product placed on hold due to incident, out of specification test results, obsolete or slow-moving inventory.
  • Manage the facility Environmental Monitoring Program; collect and conduct swabbing when necessary.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Food Science or a relevant technical function required; with a minimum of five years working experience in manufacturing.
  • Minimum of three-five years in a quality management role.

  • Highly self-motivated, high energy and ability to work independently, show initiative and drive positive change in system, processes and culture.
  • Demonstrated experience in quality Management Systems.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO and NSF Standards and Regulatory Requirements of FDA, FSMA, HACCP Programs; PCQI Certified preferred.
  • Knowledge of MS Office and ERP systems; SAP preferred.
  • Experience supporting third party audits (i.e. BRC, ISO 9001, NSF) and Regulatory unannounced audit (i.e. FDA).
  • Ability to understand and comply with all company policies and procedures as well as all applicable local/state/federal regulations.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and provide after-hours support to 25/5 and occasional weekend operation for critical quality issues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams and thrives under pressure in a fast-paced and challenging facility environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present information to all levels within the facility, throughout the Morton Salt organization as well as internal and external auditors/customers.
  • Must be a US Citizen or authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
