Supplier Quality Manager in Chicago, IL at Morton Salt

Job Description

The primary responsibility of this position is to approve and manage raw material and packaging suppliers to ensure compliance with Morton Salt, regulatory, and industry standards. This is accomplished through creating effective supplier partnerships, evaluating risks, and raising the standards of supplier facilities, policies, and practices.

Responsibilities Support Procurement and Commercialization teams with the new supplier process by assessing the sites’ quality and food safety programs, manufacturing capabilities.
Partner with Supplier Auditing to review supplier documentation and audit results; Drive closure of corrective actions from food safety and quality non-conformances.
Support internal manufacturing sites on raw material and packaging quality incident resolution; Perform on-site supplier visits for root cause analysis and corrective action verification
Support Continuous Improvement efforts with suppliers to conform with Morton Salt, regulatory, and industry standards (i.e. ISO 9001, GMP, FSMA, GFSI).
Review and evaluate supplier quality data (i.e. Vendor Notifications, Returns, Audit Results) to identify process improvement and risk reduction opportunities within the supply chain.
Promote the use of industry continuous improvement techniques such as Lean, Six-Sigma, Error-Proofing, etc. to ensure consistency of purchased materials.

Qualifications Bachelor degree in Food Science, Microbiology, Engineering, or other related field.
Minimum 8 years’ experience in a quality assurance or quality engineering role within the food industry.
Direct experience managing international suppliers in the food or pharmaceutical world required.
Strong knowledge in food safety and quality system management, FSMA requirements, and GFSI and ISO standards.
Experience performing and/or reviewing audits (GMP, HACCP, ISO, GFSI) required.     
 
HACCP certification is required.
FSMA PCQI certification preferred, must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
 Six Sigma/Lean certification or other Continuous Improvement/Problem Solving experience strongly desired.     
 
Must have good organization, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to influence and drive compliance to standards and specifications.
Must have strong problem solving, team building, planning and decision making skills.
Must have facilitator skills and able to work with multiple facilities to achieve results.
Knowledge and understanding of quality control and quality assurance programs and concepts.
Working knowledge and understanding of food safety practices.
Knowledge and understanding of food regulations (FDA, Health Canada)
 
Internal personnel at all levels
External packaging materials and ingredients suppliers
 
This position will be based in Chicago and will require approximately 30% travel including overnight stays.
